Nikon Remotes and Wi-Fi 101

Here's the scoop on (reasonably) current Nikon remotes and WiFi accessories, and the cameras they do or don't work on.

Wired Remote

Good news and bad news here: Nikon has long used the 10-pin connector on their high-end cameras, and it has remained consistent across six generations of pro gear now. The following recent cameras have Nikon circular 10-pin connectors: D300/D300s, D500, D700, D800, D800E, D810, D850, D3s, D3x, D4, D4s, D5, and D6. These cameras can use all the round 10-pin remotes:

  • ML-3 Modulite combination wired/wireless remote
  • MC-30a is the basic wired remote with trigger lock
  • MC36a is the multifunction wired remote that supports timed options
  • MC-21a is the 10' (3m) extension cable for 10-pin

The consumer cameras are more complicated because Nikon has had two different styles of wired release for them:

  • MC-DC1 was introduced with the D70s, and works with the D70s and D80 cameras
  • MC-DC2 uses a 10-pin rectangular socket introduced with the D90 and also works with the D3xxx, D5xxx, D7xxx, D600, D610, D750, D780, and Df DSLRs, as well as the Coolpix A, P7700, and Nikon Z System cameras
  • The D40, D40x, D50, D60, D70, and D3000 do not have wired remote options available from Nikon

Infrared Remote

Nikon has one IR remote that works with DSLRs, the simple ML-L3:

  • ML-L3: Coolpix P7700, Coolpix A, Nikon 1 models, D3xxx, D5xxx, D7xxx, D6xx can all use it directly with no additions.

Radio Remote

Nikon has two radio-based remotes, the simpler WR-10 models, and the more complex WR-1 model:

  • WR-R10 (now separated into WR-T11a and WR-R11b for the different ten-pin connectors): Coolpix P7700, D90, D3xxx, D5xxx, D7xxx, D6xx, D750, D780, and Df all use with the WR-R10 or WR-R11b receiver plugged into the camera. The D300/D300s, D500, D700, D800/D800E, D810, D850, D2 series, D3 series, D4 series, D5, and D6 all require an additional WR-A10 that the actual WR-R10 plugs into, or just the newer WR-R11a. 
  • WR-1: D90, D3xxx, D5xxx, D7xxx, D6xx, D750, D780, and Df all use the MC-38 connecting cord; the D300/D300s, D500, D700, D800/D800E, D810, D850, D2 series, D3 series, D4 series, D5, and D6 all use the MC-37 connecting cord (both supplied with the controller). The controller itself occupies the hot shoe of the camera and plus indirectly into the camera's GPS or 10-pin port.

Wi-Fi

Nikon has several Wi-Fi options, and they tend to be very specific to camera groups. The basic WU-## models are designed mostly to work with dedicated Nikon apps on iOS or Android. The WT-## models are more sophisticated systems. 

  • WU-1a: plugs directly into the camera's remote port and works with the Coolpix P330, P520, A, P7800, and D3200, D5200, D7100, and Df models. These models use the Nikon WMU apps.
  • WU-1b: plugs directly into the camera's remote port and works with the Nikon 1 S1, J3, AW1, and V2 models, plus the D600 and D610. These models use the Nikon WMU apps.
  • WT-4A: plugs into the following cameras via a cable: D7xxx, D300/D300s, D700, D800/D800E, D810, D3 series, D4 series. The camera's firmware controls the accessory.
  • WT-5A: plugs directly into the D4 series. Can be used with the following cameras by combining it with a UT-1 communications unit: D7xxx, D800/D800E, and D810.
  • WT-6A: plugs directly into the D5 and D6 cameras. 
  • WT-7A: a grip-style accessory that bolts onto the bottom of the camera. Compatible with the D500 and D850 (as well as Z6 and Z7). 

Wi-Fi is built into the D5300 and D750 cameras and uses the Nikon WMU app.  SnapBridge Wi-Fi is built into the D6, D500, D780, D850, D3400, D5600, and D7500 cameras, and uses the SnapBridge app on your mobile device.
